Since its inception back in 2018, the all-ladies poker tournament held during The Malta Poker Festival aptly called Ladies First! has boasted some of the nicest hosts the poker industry has.

This Autumn edition will be held at Portomaso Casino on Saturday 30th of October, 2022, starting at 4:00 pm.  The host, for what it is expected to be a full house event, is Grosvenor’s pro ambassador Katie Swift.  Katie discovered poker when her parents taught her the game during the Christmas holidays, and the rest is history.

She secured her first GUKPT Main Event Final Table result in Manchester.  Within months of each other, she achieved her biggest tournament result (at the time) both online and live.  As an anonymous player, the online win went silently, however her runner up finish in the Goliath event put her on the poker map.  She beat 4209 players, to finish as runner up in Grosvenor Poker’s record-breaking event “The Goliath “to pocket £46,300.  As she says herself “elated was an understatement”.

MPF Event Director Ivonne Montealegre describes Katie as “a talented poker player, focused and hard working.  A present and driven mother, wife, daughter and business women, she seems to juggle the poker pro career and her personal family in a brilliant manner -something I admire.  It is so refreshing to hear from this women powerhouse, a role model for all women.  All of us at MPF marvel and revere Katie and can’t wait to have her here on the island.  She is very accessible and determined to grow the women participation in poker.”

Currently Katie is in Vegas participating on the main event and has added some deep runs to her already impressive poker CV.

You can expect to see Kate Swift at the MPF Grand Event as well as hosting the Ladies First event.

Live and online satellites for the Ladies First event will be announced soon.

Third Time’s the Charm for Malta Poker Festival

Established in 2018, the series was founded by Ivonne Montealegre who said that she wanted to take the tournament “to the next level” and make the Malta Poker Festival “the most spectacular destination [on the island].”

Malta: So Much More Than Just a Mediterranean Poker Mecca

The festival’s schedule was littered with numerous poker tournaments and thousands of players took their shot at boosting their bankrolls and running deep to win coveted trophies. Beyond that, there was also plenty of hot and heavy action in the cash game rooms that started each afternoon and continued on into the early morning hours each day.

A Perfect 10: The Power Behind The Malta Poker Festival’s Success

Success doesn’t happen on its own though, and having observed two days of activity here in Malta, it’s already crystal clear to me that the festival owes its success to 10 specific ingredients, all of which happen to begin with the letter “P”, which I’ve laid out in this feature.

Malta: The Lighter Way to Enjoy Poker

The Battle of Malta and Malta Poker Festival are in the books. In pre-pandemic times, both were staples of the European fall schedule but this year, both sought to take advantage of the pent-up hunger for live poker by launching spring editions. Such was their success, testament to the power of both brands, that it would not be surprising to see them both become bi-annual festivals going forward.

Big Plans for Ladies First! 2022 edition

Ladies first MPF 2022 Spring news post

During the Malta Poker Festival and historically on Saturday at 4:00 pm kicks off the Ladies Event adequately called: Ladies First!  The Spring Edition of Ladies First! will take place Saturday 30th of April, 2022 at 16:00 hrs.

MPF’s 2018’s edition, Ladies First! saw over 100 female entrants.  The year after, even more.  During 2018 and 2019 Daiva Byre was the event’s host and a lot of her followers from her Facebook group Fantastic Ladies of Poker (FLIP) made it to the island.

After a 2-year hiatus, due to the world pandemic COVID-19 situation, 2022 expects to have a memorable Ladies First! event.

The buy-in sees a discount of 900 euro for women, leaving it at 100 EUR for women and 1,000 EUR for men.

This edition sees Maureen Bloechlinger as the event’s host.  Maureen has great acumen in the poker world being the Founder Globetrotting Poker Ladies & Globetrotting Poker, Buy-In.Info Marketing, Herzdamen Core Team.  She represents one of the most reliable and unbiased poker sources in Europe and Worldwide.

Mrs. Bloechlinger’ s goal is “to encourage more women to play poker using the Ladies First! event as a springboard into open fields. Playing at a poker festival like Malta Poker Festival can be intimidating given the number of players and I believe the Ladies First! event provides an atmosphere to have fun, play poker and learn.  It also provides the opportunity to meet fellow female players and to make friends. I actually met some of my dearest female poker friends at a Ladies Event in Malta and it really did change my poker experience and brought it to the next level.”

She enthusiastically keeps adding: “my goal is to surpass 2018’s event and have more than 100 entries! I also hope that 30% are motivated to return in fall to play the MPF Main Event!”

The WPA (Women’s Poker Association) is powering the event and their core values of getting more women to play at are the heart of the Event’s Director Mrs. Ivonne Montealegre, which is also the WPA’s International Affairs Director.

Mrs.  Montealegre tells us “expect a few interesting announcements in terms of Ladies First! Event.  We will have exclusive online qualifiers and a special promo at WPA for the winner to travel to Malta and play Ladies First! VIP style”.
