By Jason Glatzer | April 30, 2023 2:18 am

The Day 1e flight has concluded with 23 players advancing from the 90-entry field. This means tomorrow’s Day 2 will begin with 331 players remaining out of the 1,226 players remaining.

Antonio Chille led the way out of the turbo flight with 402,000 in chips with Fraser Mackenze (333,000), Lasse Jacobsen (331,000), and Sjoerd Nikkels (322,000) also bagging more than 300,000 in chips.

Meanwhile, The Hendon Mob’s Roland Boothby (251,000), Dost Ghrabie (243,000), Facebook group Globetrotting Poker founder Maureen Bloechlinger (206,000), and 2022 MPF Autumn Edition Grand Event fourth-place finisher Andrew Cutajar (168,000) are among the players to advance.

Johannes Deusing said as he got called three-bet jamming seven-five on Day 1d saying he wanted to go play the turbo and perhaps also saw the future as he managed to bag a healthy stack of 205,000.

Day 2 will kick off at 1 p.m. Stay tuned for the Day 2 seat draw and see you tomorrow!

Final Four Hands of Day 1d

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 11:43 pm

The clock stopped with nine minutes to go on Day 1d. The floor just announced that each table will deal four more hands in addition to the hand they are on before surviving players will bag into tomorrow’s Day 2 kicking off at 1 p.m.

We will update you tonight with the final chip counts for Day 1d and likely will do the same for Day 1e and tomorrow’s seat draw.

The official payouts are being finalized as we speak and we hope to share those with you tonight as well.

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 11:37 pm

Late registration just closed for Day 1e. That field attracted 90 last-minute entries to bring the total up to 1,226 entries. A total of 24 players will advance from Day 1e.

Meanwhile, the €300,000 guarantee wasn’t just beaten but it was absolutely demolished by nearly double with the prize pool growing to a final total of €588,480!

We will publish the payouts tomorrow as soon as they are available.

Demircan Wins Big with Ten-Eight Suited; Ojala Triples

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 11:27 pm

Level 13: 2,000/4,000 (4,000)
Entries: 104/337

Janne Ojala open-jammed for 11,500. The action folded around to Emmanuele Staropoli who three-bet to 26,000 from the small blind. Serdar Demircan four-bet shoved for close to 300,000 and Staropoli snap-called off his stack of less than 150,000.

Janne Ojala: K4
Emmanuele Staropoli: AQ
Serdar Demircan: 108

Ojala tripled up with top pair after the K298J ran out on the board. Demircan made out well as well as his ten-eight suited got there against ace-queen to eliminate Staropoli.

Serdar Demircan – 380,000
Janne Ojala – 40,000
Emmanuele Staropoli – 0

Final Day 1d Blind Level Begins

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 11:08 pm

Level 13: 2,000/4,000 (4,000)
Entries: 114/337

The final blind level of Day 1d kicked off. Players will bag chips after this blind level into tomorrow’s Day 2.

Meanwhile, last-minute late registration is still open for the final opening flight for the turbo Day 1e. We will find out more shortly about how many entries the entire event attracted and how many players will advance from Day 1e.

Pocket Rockets for Klandy

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 11:00 pm

Level 12: 1,500/3,000 (3,000)
Entries: 116/337

Simo Klandy opened for 7,000 from the cutoff. Karl Sepp called from the button before Alex Montgomery three-bet jammed from the big blind for his massive stack over the two players with short stacks. Klandy called off for his stack of 45,000 while Sepp folded.

Simo Klandy: AA
Alex Montgomery: KQ

“That’s my favorite hand,” Serdan Demircan, who also was at the table shared with Montgomery.

Regardless of whether it was someone’s favorite hand or not, it didn’t get there with the 84785 running out on the board.

The table, which has been fun and lively all day, just broke with the players now scattered to other tables.

Alex Montgomery – 365,000
Semir Demircan – 350,000
Simo Klandy – 100,000
Karl Sepp – 60,000

Smyth Out of Chips

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 10:50 pm

Level 12: 1,500/3,000 (3,000)
Entries: 119/337

We caught up with the hand with Sean Smyth three-bet jamming his 36,000 stack from the big blind. There may have been another player in the hand but it was Maurizio Fisicaro who was tanking for a few moments when we reached the table.

Fisicaro called and Smyth got out of his seat.

Sean Smyth: K10
Maurizio Fisicaro: A8

Smyth got no love from the 7J624 board and was eliminated from the Day 1d field. He can still make tomorrow’s Day 2 if he enters the turbo Day 1e which is on its final level of late entry. The Day 1e field has attracted 86 entries thus far with 62 players still in contention.

Final Day 1d Break

Players are on their final short break of Day 1d. There will be two more blind levels after the break before players will bag their stacks into tomorrow’s Day 2.

“I Just Want to Play the Turbo”

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 10:10 pm

Level 11: 1,500/2,500 (2,500)
Entries: 139/337

Morgan Montceau opened for 5,500 from the hijack before Johannes Duesing three-bet jammed for 72,500 from the cutoff. Montceau asked for a count before he called.

“I just want to play the turbo,” said Deusing before turning his cards over referring to the final Day 1e flight running now.

Johannes Deusing: 75
Morgan Montceau: AQ

We aren’t exactly sure why Deusing blew up his stack but both his cards were still live. However, he bricked the K2839 board and ran off to try to advance through the Day 1e flight instead.

Morgan Montceau – 400,000
Johannes Deusing – 0

Liscsinzky Eliminates Jarman

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 9:56 pm

Level 11: 1,500/2,500 (2,500)
Entries: 135/337

Olga Liscsinzky opened the button for 6,000. William Jarman jammed for less than 10 big blinds and Liscsinzy called.

William Jarman: QJ
Olga Liscsinzky: A9

Liscsinzky nailed two pair on the 9KA flop but Jarman still had four outs for a gutshot to Broadway. However, the bright lights of Broadway weren’t meant to be for Jarman with the blank 10 turn and 2 river completing the board.

Olga Liscsinzky – 125,000
William Jarman – 0

“What!!!?!… No!!”

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 9:51 pm

Level 11: 1,500/2,500 (2,500)
Entries: 141/337

Karl Sepp just got a walk from the big blind. OK, this might not be a worthy update but we have more.

“What!!!?!…. No!!” shouted Sepp as he turned over pocket queens. This got him back to near a starting stack.

Sepp has been on quite a rollercoaster ride colliding his stack in two separate hands.

First he lost a 120,000 chip pot after hitting a set with his deuces. He got it in against Nils Diekmann after a seven hit the turn. Diekmann had pocket sevens and Sepp was down to about 35,000.

Sepp then doubled this up with a little luck on his side. He got his 35,000 stack in with sevens and was up against the jacks held by Serdar Demircan. It wasn’t a seven that saved him. Instead, it was a runner-runner flush that got the job done to double. Demircan could afford this as he has had one of the bigger stacks in the room since near the start of the day.

Serdar Demircan – 400,000
Nils Diekmann – 150,000
Karl Sepp – 50,000

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 9:23 pm

Level 10: 1,000/2,000 (2,000)
Entries: 155/337

We caught up to the action when Louis Cartarius three-bet to 16,000 from the big blind. He was called by Flaviano Cammisuli before Bartosch Maciejek four-bet jammed to 77,500. Cartarius tanked for a few moments before he called, while Cammisuli quickly folded.

Bartosch Maciejek: QQ
Louis Cartarius: 99

The queens held for Maciejek with the 7210A8 running out on the board to double through Cartarius.

Bartosch Maciejek – 180,000
Flaviano Cammisuli – 150,000
Louis Cartarius – 100,000

Unlucky Jacks for Cankara

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 9:06 pm

Level 10: 1,000/2,000 (2,000)
Entries: 165/337

Vlad Ardeleanu opened for 5,500 from middle position. Firat Cankara jammed for 23,000 from the cutoff. Ardeleanu called after he confirmed the amount.

Firat Cankara: JJ
Vlad Ardeleanu: 109

Cankara was in an amazing spot to double his short stack. Or at least so it appeared.

Ardeleanu paired up his nine on the 79K flop. Cankara was still ahead after the 4 turn. However, that all changed when the 9 spiked the river to improve Ardeleanu to a set.

“Good game,” Cankara said while appearing to take the bad beat in stride.

Firat Cankara – 175,000
Vlad Ardeleanu – 0

Side Event Update

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 8:59 pm

The side events have been booming today. Here is a quick update on the €150 Ladies First! powered by Chris Read, the €230 Seniors Event powered by Jackie “Poker Mama” Cachia, and the €120 APAT Mediterranean Championship.

Ladies First!

The Ladies First! event is running on the same floor and was the first one we passed by. The event attracted 73 entries to generate a €9,110 prize pool. The top seven players will get paid at least a €310 min-cash with tonight’s winner slated to go home with the €2,690 top prize along with two trophies (one from MPF and one from the WPA).

MPF Founder Ivonne Montealegre is looking for another deep run with 14 players remaining. She took second place last spring to the very person hosting this year’s event in Chris Read. Read is no longer in the event but Poker Power’s AJ Rudolph is still in the running.

Other women in the quest for the title include Head of Poker at the Hippodrome Kerryjane Craigie, Deanna Debosz, Franky Green, Annica Gustavsson, Mary Kerr, Karen Koekkoek, Lan Ly, Chucky Preston, Lisa Roberts, Janet Rose, Hester Saunders, and 2022 MPF Autumn Edition Ladies First! host Katie Swift, who also bagged a big stack in the Grand Event on Day 1c.

Seniors & APAT

Late registration is still open in both the Seniors Event and the two-day APAT Championship, although the late registration for the latter is about to close with 316 entries creating a €30,336 prize pool.

Meanwhile, late registration for the Seniors Event will be open for some time but it has proven to be popular with already 73 entries of at least 50 years or older getting in the action.

Set Over Set for Coffin Vs. Cicekdemir

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 8:37 pm

Level 9: 1,000/1,500 (1,500)
Entries: 187/337

It has been an up-and-down roller coaster ride for Ertan Cicekdemir. He was on a nice uptick on his third and final Day 1d bullet at the dinner break when he had around 300,000. He still has a healthy stack but not nearly as nice as before after the following cooler.

Cicekdemir called a four-bet from the hijack to 31,000 by Lewis Coffin from the button.

Coffin fired out for 17,000 on the A23 flop before both players checked the 4 turn. The J river completed the board and Coffin fired out for 85,500. Cicekdemir called shortly after only to get some very bad news.

Coffin turned over the AA for the top set. Cicekdemir was about to toss his hand into the muck but instead showed the table he had a monster as well with JJ.

Lewis Coffin – 280,000
Ertan Cicekdemir – 140,000

“Apologies” as Coffin Sends Two Out

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 8:23 pm

Level 9: 1,000/1,500 (1,500)
Entries: 202/337

Lewis Coffin opened from early position before Bat Levi jammed for 33,500. Gary Whitehead only had 5,000 going into the hand. This went into the pot before Coffin asked for a count of Levi’s stack. He paused for about 10 more seconds before he called.

Gary Whitehead: J8
Bat Levi: KK
Lewis Coffin: Q10

Levi was ahead but fell behind after Coffin improved to top two pair on the Q410 flop.

“A nine would be good,” Whitehead quietly said while Levi remained stoically quiet.

Coffin’s flopped two pair wound up being enough with the blank 7 turn and 8 river completing the board to eliminate two players.

“Apologies,” Coffin said to Levi about cracking her cowboys.

“Good game, everyone,” said Levi on her way to the exit.

Lewis Coffin – 160,000
Bat Levi – 0
Gary Whitehead – 0

Kicker Issues for Campbell

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 6:41 pm

Level 8: 600/1,200 (1,200)
Entries: 219/331

United Kingdom’s Leon Campbell has been off to a great start but just gave some of his stack in a hand against Pieter Koedijk as follows.

Both Campbell and Koedijk checked with 25,000 in the pot on the turn with the 41085 already on the board. Campbell led out for 6,500 after the 3 river completed the board.

Koedijk called and immediately turned over the A10 for the top pair with the top kicker. Campbell mucked his hand but not before flashing the table the 10 to show that he had the same pair but some obvious kicker issues.

Leon Campbell – 140,000
Pieter Koedijk – 80,000

Day 1d Officially Biggest Opening Flight

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 6:37 pm

Level 8: 600/1,200 (1,200)
Entries: 219/331

Day 1d is officially the biggest of the first four opening flights with 331 entries in the mix. This beats the previous high set yesterday of 330 entries on Day 1c. The field is at 1,130 entries and still growing with late registration not closing until the start of Level 9. There is still more than 20 minutes remaining in Level 8 before players will head on a 75-minute dinner break.

“It Was Actually Good For Me You Had Eight-Seven”

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 6:29 pm

Level 8: 600/1,200 (1,200)
Entries: 223/330

Rory Turubassa checked with nearly 30,000 in the pot and the 482Q on the board after the turn.

Vincent Calenti jammed for 25,400. Turubassa went into the tank before he asked for a count. He tanked some more before Calenti opened up a dialogue.

“You might be in front,” Calenti said to Turubassa.

“I’m not in front,” replied Turubassa.

“You might have five-three,” Calenti speculated out loud.

A couple of more minutes went by before Turubassa folded and mucked his hand.

Calenti showed his 87 for the second pair along with a flush draw.

“It was actually good for me you had eight-seven,” said Turubassa. “I had eight-six.”

Whether or not he had eight-six we will never know as players are under no obligation to share what they had if their cards were mucked.

Vincent Calenti – 60,000
Rory Turubassa – 40,000

Queen-Eight Suited Doesn’t Get There for Maiorana

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 6:19 pm

Level 7: 500/1,000 (1,000)
Entries: 230/325

Rocco Maiorana opened for 7,500 from early position. Kanan Farzaliyev paused for a few moments from the small blind before he jammed for more than 70,000. Maiorana called off for more than 25,000 and the cards were turned over.

Rocco Maiorana: Q8
Kanan Farzaliyev: 99

Maiorana didn’t get it in with the strongest hand but at least his queen was live from the start. However, he was unable to connect with the A5K24 board and his chip stack went over to Farzaliyev.

Meanwhile, Totti Lind is giving the Grand Event another chance. He has his headphones on today and there hasn’t been any talk of Strawberry Cream Cheese Pie prop bets like there was with Lee Colfer on Day 1a. Lind has about double a starting stack near the end of Level 7.

Kanan Farzaliyev – 110,000
Totti Lind – 100,000

Vangarelli Runs Into a Flush

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 5:56 pm

Level 9: 500/1,000 (1,000)
Entries: 241/320

Rigo Vangarelli open-jammed for about 15 big blinds with not much in the pot and the 528 on the board after the flop. Lewis Coffin called and the cards were turned over.

Rigo Vangarelli: 75
Lewis Coffin: K6

Vangarelli flopped middle pair and it was more or less a coinflip situation against Coffin with two overcards and a flush draw.

The flush draw was completed for Coffin after the 2 landed on the turn and Vangarelli was drawing dead. The Q river made the hand official and Vangarelli will need to re-enter either on Day 1d or later in Day 1e for a chance to find a bag into tomorrow’s Day 2.

Speaking of late registration, the window will close after two more blind levels and the 75-minute dinner break. The Day 1d field will be closed as soon as cards are in the air for Level 9. Those missing out during the first four opening flights will have one more opportunity tonight in the turbo-charged Day 1e.

Best of luck to everyone trying to advance to Day 2 and beyond in the 2023 MPF Spring Edition Grand Event.

Lewis Coffin – 120,000
Rigo Vangarelli – 0

Raffaele Cecere jammed his short stack from early position. The action folded around to Morgan Montceau in the small blind.

“How much is it?” Montceau asked the dealer.

The chips were counted and it was confirmed that Cecere jammed for 9,800. Montceau then jammed for near a starting stack and Cole Maguire folded from the big blind.

Raffaele Cecere: 88
Morgan Montceau: 1010

Monteceau’s tens held on the 4QQ7J board to eliminate Cecere.

Cole Maguire – 140,000
Morgan Monteceau – 60,000

Karl Sepp Wins the Fancy Dress Award

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 5:26 pm

Players are on a 15-minute break. We caught up with Estonia’s Karl Sepp, who we haven’t seen since the pandemic. He has about 75,000 on Day 1d but this isn’t why he gets a special mention.

Sepp easily gets the fanciest dress-up award if we had one. I will make one up and award it to him.

“You are dressed to the nines today, old friend,” this reporter said.

“It’s more like a six,” replied Sepp. “I am saving my really fancy clothes for the final table.”

Sepp shared he started the day with an Espresso Martini and has a fancy bottle of Prosecco in front of him now.

We wish Sepp the best of luck in his journey and will ask our official photographers to grab a better photo than we were able to take.

Hollywooding Can Be Profitable and Fun

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 5:17 pm

Level 6: 400/800 (800)
Entries: 247/306

There was more than 10,000 in the pot with the seven-five-five flop when both Serdar Demircan and Arnaud Barthel checked. Dost Gharbie bet 3,000 and this is where all the fun began.

Demircan put his sunglasses on as he typically does whenever he plays a hand and began his usual Hollywood talk before he pumped it up to 6,000. Barthel jacked it up with a four-bet to 16,000. Ghrabie called before Demircan four-bet to 40,000. Barthel got out of the way and Gharbie tanked.

“Ace-seven?” asked Ghrabie.

“Ace-seven is good,” shared Demircan.

Ghrabie eventually called to see the jack on the turn. Demircan jammed for about 45,000 and Ghrabie tanked again. Demircan was back to his usual table talk before Ghrabie eventually called with just a big blind behind if he lost the hand.

Dost Ghrabie: Pocket Eights
Serdar Demircan: Pocket Sevens

Demircan was in amazing shape with his full house. Ghrabie was unable to get his two-outer and was down to one big blind. He managed to double this up once but shortly after hit the rail.

“I was only calling against him at this table,” Ghrabie said after the hand.

It was a fun hand and more importantly a great start for Demircan who we have seen many times before as he is at all the big events at Portomaso Casino.

Serdar Demircan – 240,000
Dost Ghrabie – 0

Mikael Fjarrstad: 88

Aprile improved to top pair on the [invalid notations] turn and paid off Fjarrstad after the K river made things official.

Chrysi’s Rockets Good Against Kolarki’s Ladies

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 4:27 pm

Level 5: 300/600 (600)
Entries: 243/275

Tomas Kolarki checked the 2J3 flop. Phiniotis Chrysi bet 8,400 into a pot of around 15,000. Kolarki jammed for more than the 33,600 that Chrysi had in her stack. Chrysi snap-called and was miles ahead.

“Set of threes?” guessed Kolarki.

Chrysi’s hand wasn’t as good as that but still good none the less as the cards were flipped over.

Phiniotis Chrysi: AA
Tomas Kolarki: QQ

The 10 was dealt on the turn followed by the A river which further improved Chrysi to a set of aces to double her stack.

Phiniotis Chrysi – 85,000
Tomas Kolarki – 22,000

There was close to 15,000 in chips in the pot with the 4751010 on the board after the river when Ertan Cicekdemir check-called a bet of 11,000 by Alex Montgomery.

Montgomery turned over the 55 to win the hand with a full house after Cicekdemir mucked his cards.

Alex Montgomery – 65,000

Two Full Houses and a Flush?

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 4:10 pm

Level 4: 200/400 (400)
Entries: 245/275

Edmond-Sebastian Ienci bet 25,000 into a pot of a bit more with the A8656 on the board. Kevin Hogg called before Peter Kaspar jammed for 36,000.

Ienci attempted to jam over the top but the dealer informed him that all he could do is fold or call. Both Ienci and Hogg quickly called after that and the cards were turned over.

Kaspar turned over the 65 for a full house. Normally this would be an amazing hand but Ienci turned over AA for a better full house.

Hogg tried to muck his hand but the dealer turned it over to show the Q8 for a flush. Kaspar hit the rail after the hand while Ienci was among the chip leaders.

Edmond Sebastian Ienci – 170,000
Kevin Hogg – 35,000
Peter Kaspar – 0

Belsky “Running Bad” With Quad Queens in the Ladies First!

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 4:02 pm

The ladies are having fun in the €150 Ladies First! event and the field has already grown to 57 entries with 52 players remaining. We walked by while one fun hand was taking place.

Franky Green was down to just crumbs in her stack. She jammed them in and was up against Ilana Belsky.

Franky Green: AJ
Ilana Belsky: QQ

“Don’t worry,” Belsky said to Green. “I’m running pretty bad.”

The table erupted with laughter when Belsky improved to quad queens on the 8QQ flop and won the hand after the 3 turn and 6 river completed the board.

Green left the table soon after to re-enter while the table was still enjoying talking about that hand.

A few were laughing at Belsky’s “running bad” comments from before.

“It’s still running bad as she didn’t have more chips,” Belsky said with a smile.

Photos From the Poker Power Beginner Course

There were dozens of players at the Poker Power Beginner Course with AJ Rudolph flying in from the United States to both enjoy the Malta Poker Festival and host what turned out to be an amazing session for the ladies in attendance.

As we already mentioned, at least one player in Ashleigh Schuman attended the course without playing a live poker tournament and is now battling it out in the Ladies First! event in hopes of putting what she learned to use.

Here are some photos from the Poker Power seminar.

Olga Liscsinzky wasted no time in calling. Bossa turned over Q6 for two pair. Liscsinsky won the hand with a better two pair after she showed the Q10.

Gravagna Turns Over the Nuts

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 3:34 pm

Level 4: 200/400 (400)
Entries: 240/254

There was close to 20,000 in the pot with the Q763K already on the board when the action was paused on Fausto Gravagna for a few minutes. He eventually bet 7,200 and Giuseppe Marone went into the tank for over two minutes.

Eventually, Marone called only to get the bad news. Gravagna turned over the AQ for the nut flush. Nothing could be this but Marone flashed the inconsequential 7 anyway.

Fausto Gravagna – 110,000
Giuseppe Marrone – 50,000

Martin Smith Chats About Mixed Games

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 3:12 pm

The Malta Poker Festival caught up with the MPF HORSE host Martin Smith a couple of days ago. We would first like to thank Smith for all the hard work he has done to help grow the mixed game community and it was an honor for this author to play in the event he hosted earlier this week.

Smith is an accomplished poker author and podcaster in addition to enjoying playing some poker. While he had to go home already, we can still have him with us in the blog today.

Thanks again, Martin, and enjoy the interview!

Ladies First! Begins

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 3:09 pm

The €150 MPF Ladies First powered by Chris Read has just kicked off with 40 entries in full force after some announcements by MPF founder Ivonne Montealegre and Read.

These two will both be in the mix along with other accomplished female players including Ilana Belsky, Maureen Blochlinger, Head of Poker at The Hippodrome Kerryjane Craigie, Caroline Cove, Lydia Cugudda, Alessandra Cuntro, Deanna Dobosz, Sophie Gatherole, Lisa Roberts, La Sengphet, Carina Voncken, Anne-Marie Yuen, and many more.

Of course, Poker Power’s AJ Rudolph is also in the mix after hosting the Beginners Course a few hours ago.

Among the players that attended the course was Ashleigh Schuman. We learned from her father Jonathan Schuman, who is here thanks to winning a MPF package in the Mega Series Mystery Bounty event earlier this month, that this will be Ashleigh’s first-ever live tournament. She will be putting what she learned in the Poker Power seminar to good use and we wish her the best of luck.

Our primary focus today will be the Grand Event but we will definitely at a minimum share some photos of the Ladies First! event as well along with an update or two along the way.

Level 3: 200/300 (300)
Entries: 205/210

The 2023 MPF Spring Edition €550 Grand Event has been an absolute success. The field has already soared past 1,000 entries with 1,009 entries and counting in the field with 799 entries during the first three opening flights along with another 210 entries thus far in today’s Day 1d.

This makes it a certainty that this will be the biggest MPF Grand Event Spring Edition with last year’s festival attracting 1,014 entries and may come close to the 1,326 entries attracted last autumn when that guarantee was €500,000.

Best of luck to all of the Grand Event players!

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 2:33 pm

Level 2: 100/200 (200)

Albert Sapiano limped from middle position and was called by Luke Borg before Glen Gaines fired out a bet of 1,200 from the cutoff. Vincenzo Scarcella called from the button before Sapiano and Borg called as well.

Sapiano fired out for 2,000 on the 656 flop and was only called by Gaines. More action came on the 4. Sapiano bet 6,000. Gaines jammed for 24,700 and Sapiano called.

Gaines’ cowboys held after the J river completed the board to double through Sapiano.

Sapiano was noticed leaving the table a few minutes later having dusted off his remaining stack of 20,000. We will likely see him back in the field for his 11th overall Grand Event bullet soon after unsuccessfully fired the maximum three bullets on each of the first three opening flights.

Galea led out for a min-bet of 200 on the 3103 flop and both players called. The 7 turn was checked around. Galea bet 2,200 on the 8 river. Cicekdemir called and Ticconi folded. Palumbo First on the Rail on Day 1d

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 1:33 pm

Level 1: 100/100 (100)
Entries: 128/129

Francesco Palumbo was the first player to hit the rail on Day 1d. We haven’t seen him hop back in just yet but he has plenty of time to do so if he so chooses with late registration open for at least six more hours.

Brian Calleja, who is also at the table, brought the hand to our attention while the hand’s winner Samuel Olave broke down the details.

Palumbo bet 3,000 into a pot of a little more after the 653 were dealt on the flop. Olave raised to 8,000 and Palumbo called. Palumbo check-called a bet of 13,000 on the A turn by Olave before jamming the 6 river. Olave called and turned over the 33 for a full house. This was more than good against his opponent’s KK to double his stack.

Samuel Olave – 100,000
Francesco Palumbo – 0

Fun and Educational Poker Power Beginner Course

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 1:21 pm

We quickly popped by where the Poker Power Beginner Course for ladies only was taking place and the turnout was amazing with around 30 ladies having fun while learning poker.

The course was in the interactive session stages where players were actually playing hands. Tatiana Fox and AJ Rudolph were among the dealers helping the players.

This is all in preparation for the €150 Ladies First! hosted by Chris Read. You can check out a cool video with Rudolph and Read below.

Day 1d Begins at 2 p.m.

By Jason Glatzer | April 29, 2023 11:41 am

Welcome back to our coverage of the 2023 Malta Poker Festival Spring Edition €550 Grand Event. Saturday is a big day with the final two opening flights taking place.

First up is Day 1d at 2 p.m. This opening flight will follow the same structure as the first three opening flights with 13 blind levels of 40 minutes each. Players will start with 50,000 in chips and be allowed to enter up to two times per opening flight before the start of Level 9.

Day 1e will kick off in the evening at 9 p.m. This opening flight has a couple of differences. First, it is a turbo-charged affair with 20-minute blind levels. Second, and perhaps more important, is that this flight will play down to 26.8% percent of the remaining field instead of 13 blind levels. This is the average amount of survivors during the first three opening flights.

Marko Luksa still holds the chip lead after bagging a whopping 687,000 in chips on Day 1a. Day 1b chip leader Shaun Halliday advanced with 656,000 while Day 1c leader Maik Buss is currently on the podium in third place with 618,000 in chips.

The Grand Event has already smashed its €300,000 guarantee with 799 entries generating a €383,520 and counting. This is certain to pass 1,000 entries today. Time will tell how big the Grand Event will become.

Meanwhile, at 1 p.m. AJ Rudolph will be representing Poker Power with an interactive poker seminar for ladies only. You can read more about that and learn a bit about Rudolph’s history in poker and with Poker Power in an article written before the event at MPF’s Official Travel Partner Main Event Travel.

Also taking place tomorrow will be the second and final day of the €230 The Hendon Mob Championship at 1 p.m., the first of two days of the €120 APAT Maltese Championship at 5 p.m., and the €250 MPF Seniors Event powered by Jackie “Poker Mama” Cachia at 8 p.m.

While the Grand Event satellites are in the books, there will be a €150 satellite to the two-day €1,100 MPF High Roller also taking place tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Come drop by to say hi to this reporter if you are in town. Otherwise, we wish you the best from wherever you are tuning in from. Have a good night and see you again when cards are back in the air for Day 1d of the MPF Grand Event starting at 2 p.m.
